Trichur Brothers
SriKrishna and Ramkumar Mohan named ‘Trichur Brothers’ by His Holiness Shankaracharya Jayendra Sarawati wowed audiences in Auckland on 30th May 2015 at Mt Roskill Intermediate School. In the concert organized by New Zealand Carnatic Music Society, they were accompanied by Shri HN Bhaskar on the violin and their father Shri Trichur Mohan on the mridangam.
They started their 4-hour concert with the evergreen Bhairavi Ata Thala Varnam ‘Viribhoni’ followed by another popular song ‘Siddhi Vinayakam’ in Shanmukhapriya which they embellished with some crisp kalpana swarams. A quick Swati Tirunal number ‘Gopalaka’ preceded a beautiful essay in Varali by both vocals and violin. Another favourite Papanasam Sivan composition ‘Ka Va Va’ ensued followed by a round of swarams.
The technical ‘Ragam Tanam Pallavi’ in Hindustani raag Jog was given the full treatment as they sang their chosen line with gusto. They explored a variety of other ragas in the tanam and swaram sections adding colour to the proceedings.
The Thukada section of the concert featured Thunbam Nergayil, Vande Matharam, Laxmi Kantha Baro by Purandara Dasar and even a film song ‘Rama Leela Megha Shyama’ Before they concluded with Mangalam Ramachandraya Janaka, they sang a beautiful Malayalam lullaby. It was actually composed by Irayaman Thampi who sang it as he admired his nephew, the future king, Swati Tirunal. Formed as a question, he asks ‘Is this baby-the Sun, the Moon, the lotus flower, the dancing peacock and so on’
And thus ended a very entertaining evening of Music and the pristine voices of the 2 brothers with their accompanists.
